Belfast company Voxbit has won business in Great Britain worth more than £3.5 million for its innovative new internet-based business phone platform, byphone, less than 18 months after launching. The firm is challenging global players in the communications market with its Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) platform, which was developed with research and development support from Invest Northern Ireland. VoIP revolutionises the way businesses communicate by reducing costs and supporting multiple types of media.

The platform, developed and built in Belfast, is marketed under the byphone brand and provides businesses with more control over their calls and substantially improves inbound and outbound call handling.

With 50 partners selling the platform to customers across Great Britain the total contract value sold since the product’s launch in 2018 is over £3.5 million. byphone also recently received the Highly Commended Hosted Platform Supplier award in the coveted Comms Business Awards 2019.

Voxbit, part of Clarity Telecom, was able to draw on the technical expertise and engineering excellence of the team at Clarity to successfully develop a range of internet products and services.

David Whelan (pictured right), Founder and Managing Director of Voxbit, said: “byphone is an end-to-end managed service that uses an innovative drag and drop system. This allows users to essentially develop their own phone system without involving their phone company. This enables organisations, for the first time, to see who is using the phones, when people are calling, and if any calls are unanswered.

“Voxbit developed the VoIP technology over many years and benefitted from financial support from Invest NI. The company now has more product development in the pipeline, with the potential to disrupt the industry through intelligent, easy-to-use products that simplify telecommunications for businesses. Our aim is to reinvent the business phone by merging the worlds of cloud computing, web services and telecommunications.”

Invest NI provided a Grant for R&D of £621,997. Invest NI’s support is part funded by ERDF under the EU Investment for Growth and Jobs Programme 2014–2020.

Dr Vicky Kell (pictured left), Invest NI’s Director of Innovation, Research & Development, said: “Voxbit is a highly innovative company that has identified areas within the communications field that are ripe for development and exploitation. The success of the byphone product in its first year in the market reflects the quality of the technology and that Voxbit clearly understands what businesses want.

“Invest NI’s Grant for R&D aims to help local businesses develop new products and technology that will improve company competitiveness and benefit the Northern Ireland economy. Voxbit is an example of a company that is focused on commercial growth and technology development and has proven that, through investing in research and development, small local companies can challenge established global enterprises.”

byphone has been shortlisted in three categories at the 2019 Comms National Awards, Best SME Telephony System, Best Hosted Telephony Platform and Best Supplier Innovation Award.
